Iris Jones’s career in the legal industry reflects a story of perseverance, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the service of others. As the Chief Marketing & Client Development Officer at Akerman LLP, Iris has redefined the role of marketing in law, building a legacy rooted in collaboration, innovation, and exceptional client service.

Her passion for justice began at a young age, inspired by the iconic television show Perry Mason, where she admired the protagonist’s relentless advocacy for the innocent. This sparked her interest in law, and despite facing skepticism from those around her, Iris remained determined to pursue a career in legal service. The catalyst for her journey occurred in sixth grade when she received a personal response from Harvard University, encouraging her to pursue law. Raised in Ohio as one of nine siblings, Iris was driven by a deep hunger for knowledge and the desire to make a lasting impact on her community.

Iris’s commitment to breaking barriers in the legal profession was evident from the beginning of her career. She started her professional journey as an Assistant Attorney General in Texas, where she defended the state in high-profile legal battles. A defining moment in her career came when she represented the Texas Attorney General’s office in the Vietnamese Fisherman’s Case against the Ku Klux Klan. This case, a landmark victory, showcased her legal expertise and further solidified her belief in the importance of justice.

Throughout her career, Iris continued to break new ground. She became the first female and African American City Attorney for Austin, Texas, where she successfully defended the city in a Voting Rights Act case before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Her contributions to these landmark cases not only demonstrated her legal prowess but also her determination to fight for the rights of marginalized communities.
